This module develops the ability to plan for, respond to and recover from emergencies and disasters affecting crowded environments. Students learn how to design, implement, test and evaluate emergency plans for natural, social and technological hazards. For Caribbean professionals, this has direct relevance to hurricane preparedness, flooding, earthquakes, major fires, mass-casualty events and other emergencies that can affect tourism facilities, public venues and communities.

This module examines how crowded environments are designed, organised and managed, including the vulnerabilities that can arise when large numbers of people gather. Students explore crowd science, command and control, communication, coordination, risk assessment and technology. This is particularly relevant to Caribbean festivals, carnivals, concerts, sporting events, hotels, cruise terminals, airports and other high-density environments.

Students learn to conduct structured threat assessments and evaluate public safety and security challenges. The module examines both organisational and malicious causes of risk and introduces analytical approaches for developing organisations capable of managing complex security threats. This knowledge can be applied across government, tourism, hospitality, transportation, events and private security.

This module focuses on leadership during incidents and crises. Students explore different interpretations of risk, leadership models, risk-reduction techniques and the challenges associated with command-and-control environments. The module is particularly valuable for professionals who may have to make rapid decisions, coordinate multiple agencies and lead teams during emergencies.

This module focuses on preparing organisations and personnel to respond effectively to disasters and crises through structured training and simulation exercises. Students develop skills in designing, managing and evaluating exercises while examining preparedness, resilience, learning outcomes and project management. For Caribbean organisations, this can support the development of hurricane drills, evacuation exercises, emergency-response simulations and business-continuity exercises.

This module develops strategic thinking for an uncertain and rapidly changing world. Students explore systems thinking and approaches to long-term planning while considering issues such as climate change, social justice, changing stakeholder expectations and emerging risks. It is especially relevant to Caribbean decision-makers who must plan for climate-related hazards, changing tourism patterns, population growth and evolving public-safety requirements.

Students develop research and analytical skills for evaluating emergency and crisis-management policies and practices. The module covers research design, data collection, surveys, interviews, archival research and quantitative analysis, together with research ethics and dissemination. This provides an important evidence-based foundation for professionals responsible for developing or evaluating public-safety policies.

This module examines how organisations can identify and manage internal and external risks while maintaining operations during disruptive events. Students consider complex political, economic, social and environmental risks, as well as crisis communication and media management. The content is highly applicable to Caribbean businesses, hotels, airports, financial institutions, government agencies and other organisations that need to remain operational during hurricanes, disasters and major disruptions.

The major research project allows MSc students to independently investigate a specialist area such as crowded places, public safety, disaster management, emergency management, resilience, international development or sustainability. Students develop skills in identifying problems, reviewing literature, designing research, collecting and analysing data, managing projects and presenting professional recommendations. A Caribbean student could potentially use the project to investigate a real regional issue such as crowd safety at Carnival, hurricane evacuation planning, cruise-port emergency management or tourism-sector resilience.

This module develops leadership capabilities for managing diverse and inclusive teams. Students examine leadership theories, organisational culture, wellbeing, equality, diversity and inclusion, and strategic approaches to workforce leadership. Successful completion provides the opportunity to obtain the CMI Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice, subject to the CMI requirements described by Coventry University.
