Applicants will typically hold a first degree or equivalent (including international qualifications) in a relevant professional healthcare field, such as a medical or nursing degree.
Registered healthcare professionals without these recognised qualifications will be considered on an individual basis and a wide range of prior experience may be taken into account. In some cases, applicants may be asked to submit a piece of work for assessment in order to confirm that they are able to work comfortably at postgraduate level, and demonstrate the requisite clinical and professional knowledge.

Who is this course for?
Our cardiology online courses are directed to specialist nurses in cardiology, GP trainee with a view to cardiology, healthcare professionals who work in A&E, Specialist Registrars/CTs and Pharmacists with a specialist interest. The knowledge of heart and cardiovascular anatomy and physiology is mandatory. The students are expected to be familiar with cardiovascular medication and have at least a basic understanding of electrocardiogram (ECG).

Programme Highlights
This module develops advanced understanding of the presentation, diagnosis and management of ischaemic heart disease and coronary artery disease. Students examine acute and chronic chest pain, diagnostic approaches including ECG, echocardiography, stress testing, SPECT, CT and cardiac MRI, as well as pharmacological and interventional treatment. Particular attention is given to complex patients with comorbidities, non-cardiac surgery and end-stage disease. For Caribbean practice, this is particularly relevant to clinicians managing patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors and complex chronic disease.
The Heart Failure module examines the clinical presentation, investigation and management of heart failure, including right-sided heart failure and complex patients with comorbidities. Students explore ECG, echocardiography, CT and cardiac MRI alongside pharmacological and interventional treatment. The module also considers exacerbations, morbidity and mortality, palliative care and end-of-life care, helping practitioners develop a more comprehensive approach to patients with advanced cardiovascular disease.
This module focuses on the diagnosis and management of cardiac rhythm disorders. Students explore ECG and Holter monitoring, echocardiography, stress testing, CT, cardiac MRI, electrophysiological studies and genetic testing. The curriculum covers atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation, stroke prevention and anticoagulation, interventional management and syncope. This knowledge is especially useful for healthcare professionals who encounter undiagnosed rhythm disorders in primary care, emergency departments and hospital settings.
Students develop advanced knowledge of valvular and congenital cardiovascular conditions, including aortic, mitral, pulmonary and tricuspid valve disease. Diagnostic approaches include ECG, echocardiography, stress testing, CT and cardiac MRI, while treatment includes pharmacological and interventional approaches. The module also develops the ability to assess congenital heart disease and make evidence-based decisions concerning intervention, making it relevant to practitioners managing patients across the lifespan.
This module broadens the student's understanding of complex cardiovascular disease beyond conventional coronary conditions. It addresses cardio-oncology, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension, aortopathy and other vasculopathies, endocarditis, myocarditis and pericarditis. Students develop the ability to differentiate these conditions, select appropriate investigations and evaluate management strategies. The emphasis on thromboembolic and inflammatory disease is particularly valuable for clinicians working in acute and hospital-based care.
This module is highly relevant to Caribbean healthcare because it addresses cardiovascular risk factors and their relationship with major chronic diseases. Students examine dyslipidaemia, hypertension, diabetes, kidney dysfunction and physical activity, including exercise considerations for patients with arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, heart failure and those recovering from cardiac surgery. The module develops skills in primary and secondary prevention and in constructing appropriate physical-activity recommendations for different clinical situations.
The second year moves the student from advanced clinical knowledge into research and evidence-based practice. Students develop skills in quantitative and qualitative research, statistical interpretation, systematic reviews, meta-analysis, evidence appraisal, audit, governance, quality improvement, health economics, research ethics and research-proposal development. They subsequently complete a substantial professional project based on an area relevant to their own practice, which may involve systematic review, organisational audit, evidence implementation, qualitative or quantitative research, case-based review or secondary-data analysis.
