Programme Overview

The BSc (Hons) Healthcare Management from the University of Essex, delivered online by Kaplan Higher Education UK, is a 100% online, part-time UK bachelor’s degree designed for people who want to develop the management, leadership, financial, operational and strategic skills needed to work within modern healthcare organisations. The programme carries 360 credits and has an indicative duration of four years, while allowing students to study without leaving their employment. Students examine healthcare management from both a business and health perspective, including public health, global health, healthcare finance, human resources, healthcare informatics, project management, health economics, strategy, innovation and research. The degree is awarded by the University of Essex; University of Essex Online is registered with the Office for Students (OfS) and is a recognised member of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA).

For students across the English-speaking Caribbean, this programme is particularly relevant because Caribbean healthcare systems need professionals who can combine health-sector knowledge with management and leadership capability. The flexible online structure allows nurses, healthcare workers, administrators, supervisors and other professionals to continue working while pursuing a UK degree. The curriculum is also highly applicable to Caribbean healthcare environments because it addresses issues such as healthcare policy, health inequalities, public health, financial decision-making, human-resource management, health-system comparisons, digital health, project management and healthcare innovation. Students can therefore develop skills applicable across ministries of health, hospitals, clinics, private healthcare providers, NGOs, insurance organisations and other health-related institutions throughout Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, The Bahamas, Belize, the OECS and wider Caribbean.

The programme is especially suitable for individuals who want to move into healthcare management, advance from clinical or administrative roles into supervisory positions, or build a foundation for future postgraduate study. Students complete the degree through assignments, discussions, presentations and other assessments rather than relying solely on traditional examinations, with access to a virtual learning environment, e-library, tutor support and Student Support services. The final Healthcare Management Dissertation allows students to independently investigate a healthcare-related issue of interest. The programme currently lists October 2026 and January 2027 starts, with regular start dates available across the academic year.

Programme Highlights

This foundation module examines how people, teams and organisations function within healthcare environments. Students explore organisational theory, healthcare organisational structures, workplace culture, multidisciplinary teams, motivation and human-resource management. The module is especially relevant to Caribbean healthcare managers because effective service delivery depends heavily on managing diverse professional teams and creating organisational cultures that support collaboration, accountability and quality patient care. Students also develop evidence-based approaches to analysing organisational problems and making informed management decisions.

This module develops advanced leadership capability for complex healthcare environments. It moves beyond traditional views of leadership to examine collaborative, systems and adaptive leadership, as well as the relationship between leadership and management, followership, power and organisational influence. Students consider how leadership can be applied to unpredictable healthcare challenges and how collaboration across organisational boundaries can improve outcomes. For Caribbean healthcare professionals moving into supervisory, departmental or executive roles, this module provides an important framework for leading multidisciplinary teams and driving organisational improvement.

This module focuses on strategic management and its application to healthcare organisations. Students examine strategic frameworks, stakeholder analysis, power mapping, innovation, sustainability and the future development of healthcare systems. A major strength is its focus on applying strategic thinking to real-world healthcare challenges rather than treating strategy as a purely theoretical business discipline. This is particularly useful for Caribbean healthcare leaders responsible for developing services, managing resources, responding to changing healthcare demands and planning for long-term organisational sustainability.

Financial management is essential for healthcare leaders who must balance patient-care priorities with limited budgets and organisational sustainability. This module introduces financial terminology, management accounting, healthcare funding, budgeting, budgetary control, financial statements and investment appraisal. Students learn how to interpret financial information and use it to support management decisions. For Caribbean healthcare managers, these skills can be applied to hospital departments, private clinics, healthcare businesses, government health services and other organisations where responsible financial planning is essential to maintaining quality services.

This module examines how marketing principles can be adapted to healthcare organisations in both public and private settings. Rather than focusing solely on commercial promotion, it considers communication, stakeholder expectations, ethics, audience analysis, social media and the development of effective communication strategies. This is increasingly relevant across the Caribbean as private hospitals, medical centres, pharmacies, health insurers and other healthcare organisations compete for patients while also needing to communicate responsibly about healthcare services. Students learn how to develop and manage marketing and communication approaches that are appropriate for complex healthcare environments.

Healthcare organisations operate in an environment of continuous change, making change-management capability a critical leadership skill. This module examines established change-management theories and applies them to real healthcare challenges, including resistance to change, clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement, equality, diversity and inclusion. Students learn how to identify the drivers and barriers to organisational change and how to develop strategies for leading sustainable improvements. This is particularly applicable to Caribbean health systems undertaking service modernisation, digital transformation, quality improvement or organisational restructuring.

The final professional project allows students to consolidate the knowledge gained throughout the Executive MBA by independently investigating a specific healthcare management problem or opportunity. Students develop an evidence-based project related to a healthcare organisation, potentially including their own workplace, and formulate practical recommendations. The project develops advanced research, data analysis, critical-thinking and business-case skills while requiring students to demonstrate how MBA concepts can solve real healthcare management challenges. For a Caribbean professional, this could potentially provide an opportunity to investigate a practical issue affecting a hospital, clinic, public-health organisation or healthcare business in their home country.
