Programme Highlights

Students develop the academic skills required for university-level success, including research techniques, academic writing, critical reading, referencing and reflective learning. The module establishes a strong foundation for independent online study and prepares students for advanced criminology and sociology coursework.

Students learn how sociologists analyse society by examining relationships between individuals, communities and institutions. The module introduces key sociological concepts while encouraging learners to think critically about social issues affecting modern societies, including those experienced throughout the Caribbean.

Students study the foundational ideas of major sociological thinkers and explore how classical and modern theories explain social behaviour, inequality, culture and institutions. These theories provide the framework for understanding many contemporary social issues.

Students investigate how identity—including gender, ethnicity, class, age and sexuality—influences both criminal behaviour and experiences within the criminal justice system. The module encourages critical analysis of discrimination, marginalisation and social inequality.

Students explore emerging developments in criminological research and contemporary debates shaping the future of criminal justice, including new theories, policy reforms and evolving crime trends.

As the capstone of the degree, students complete an independent research dissertation on a criminology or sociology topic of their choice. The project demonstrates advanced research, analytical, critical thinking and academic writing skills developed throughout the programme.
