Programme Overview

Data Analytics for Managers is a 13-week, part-time online professional course designed for professionals who want to understand how data can be used to improve business and organisational decision-making. The course examines the principles of data analytics, data sources, analytics tools and platforms, data governance, data risk, and the relationship between data analytics, data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Students also explore the evolving role of managers in organisations where data increasingly drives strategy, operations and performance.

For Caribbean professionals, the programme offers a practical way to build data-driven management capability without leaving employment or relocating overseas. Its 100% online, part-time format allows professionals in Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, The Bahamas, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Antigua & Barbuda, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and other English-speaking Caribbean markets to study while continuing their careers. The skills are relevant across Caribbean banking, financial services, tourism, healthcare, government, telecommunications, education, logistics, retail and professional services, where organisations increasingly need managers who can interpret information and make evidence-informed decisions. Students receive 24/7 access to learning resources, an eLibrary, discussion forums, live tutor Q&A and dedicated student support.

The course carries 20 academic credits at postgraduate level and the certificate is awarded by the University of Essex. The online professional courses are also accredited by The CPD Certification Service, which Essex states is recognised in more than 100 countries and allows the learning to be formally recorded as CPD. The University of Essex is registered with the UK's Office for Students (OfS) as a provider with degree-awarding powers. Importantly, this accreditation should be described accurately: the Data Analytics for Managers course itself is a CPD-accredited postgraduate-level professional course, not a Master's degree. Successful students can progress to specified postgraduate qualifications, including the PG Cert/PG Dip/MSc Business and Management (Business Analytics), without additional entry requirements.

Entry Requirements

Academic requirements

No formal academic qualifications or previous work experience are required. This is a significant feature for Caribbean professionals who may have substantial workplace experience but do not currently hold a university degree.

English-language requirement

As requested, I have excluded the English-language requirement because the target applicants are from English-speaking Caribbean countries.

Documents

Essex states that applicants must complete an application form and submit supporting documents as part of the admissions process. However, the Data Analytics for Managers course page does not publish a definitive list of individual supporting documents. Therefore, I would recommend presenting the document requirement to prospects as:

Completed application form
Valid identification document/passport, if requested during admissions
Any supporting documentation requested by Essex Admissions
Evidence of previous qualifications if applicable, although qualifications are not a formal entry requirement

The University's terms specifically confirm that applicants must submit an application form and supporting documents

Programme Highlights

Students develop an understanding of what data analytics is, how organisations use analytics tools and platforms, and how analytical capabilities can support managerial decision-making. The emphasis is on understanding and applying analytics from a management perspective rather than becoming a specialist data scientist.

This component examines the relationship between data analytics, data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Students gain the conceptual foundation needed to understand how these technologies increasingly influence business operations, customer experiences, forecasting and strategic decisions.

Students explore the changing responsibilities of managers in data-rich organisations. The focus is on developing the ability to work intelligently with data specialists, ask the right analytical questions and translate data insights into meaningful business decisions.

This area examines where organisational data comes from and how it can be used. Students consider how data can support areas such as customer management, operations, marketing, finance, human resources and strategic planning.

Students consider the ethical and regulatory responsibilities associated with collecting, managing and using organisational data. This is particularly relevant to managers dealing with customer, employee, financial and other sensitive information.

This component introduces approaches to identifying and managing risks associated with data. Students consider how organisations can reduce data-related risks while improving the reliability and usefulness of information for decision-making.

Students examine the principles of data governance and why organisations need appropriate structures, policies and accountability around data. This provides an important foundation for managers working in increasingly data-dependent organisations.
