Programme Highlights

This module introduces the foundations of modern management by exploring organisational behaviour, leadership, strategic planning and people management. Students examine how organisations operate within changing economic and political environments while learning practical techniques for leading individuals, teams and entire organisations. The module develops the management mindset required to transition successfully from engineering specialist to engineering leader.

Engineering leaders are increasingly expected to make commercially sound decisions. This module develops financial literacy by covering budgeting, costing, performance measurement, investment appraisal and financial analysis. Students learn how financial information supports operational planning and strategic decision-making, enabling them to maximise organisational value while managing engineering resources effectively.

Innovation is only valuable when it delivers commercial success responsibly. This module explores how engineering innovations move from concept to market while balancing sustainability, ethics and commercial viability. Students examine product development, intellectual property, market strategy and responsible innovation practices that create long-term business value

This module develops leadership capabilities required to manage organisational transformation. Students examine leadership styles, strategic communication, organisational change, stakeholder engagement and decision-making. Emphasis is placed on inspiring teams, leading innovation and creating high-performing engineering organisations capable of responding to rapidly changing industries.

Project management lies at the heart of successful engineering organisations. Students gain practical knowledge of internationally recognised project management methodologies including PRINCE2 and Agile thinking. Topics include project planning, scheduling, budgeting, quality management, procurement, risk management and project delivery, providing graduates with immediately applicable management skills.

Modern engineering organisations must operate reliably while managing increasingly complex risks. This module focuses on resilience engineering, operational continuity, systems reliability, hazard identification and enterprise risk management. Students learn how organisations anticipate, mitigate and recover from operational disruptions while maintaining safety and performance.

Students develop postgraduate-level research skills by learning qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, data collection techniques, critical analysis and academic writing. The module prepares students to evaluate engineering management challenges systematically and design evidence-based solutions applicable to industry.

The final research project allows students to investigate a significant engineering or management challenge relevant to their professional interests. Under academic supervision, students produce an original research report that integrates technical expertise with management theory, demonstrating their ability to solve complex organisational problems using evidence-based approaches.
