Programme Highlights
This module introduces the evolution of database technology, from traditional file-based systems to modern database management systems (DBMS). Students explore the core concepts of data storage, database architecture, data independence, database models, and the role databases play in supporting today's digital organizations. By understanding why databases have evolved and how they underpin business operations, learners develop a solid foundation for more advanced study in database design and management.
Students gain an in-depth understanding of the relational database model, the industry standard for organizing and managing structured data. The module covers relational tables, attributes, keys, relationships, integrity constraints, normalization, and relational algebra. Learners discover how well-designed relational databases improve data accuracy, reduce redundancy, and enable organizations to retrieve and analyze information efficiently for informed decision-making.
This module focuses on designing robust, scalable, and efficient database systems that meet organizational requirements. Students learn how to gather business requirements, develop conceptual, logical, and physical database models, create Entity-Relationship (ER) diagrams, and apply normalization techniques to produce optimized database structures. Emphasis is placed on translating real-world business processes into reliable database solutions that support operational and strategic goals.
Reliable data processing is essential for every organization. This module examines how database systems maintain data integrity and consistency when multiple users access information simultaneously. Students study transaction processing, concurrency control, locking mechanisms, recovery techniques, and the ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) principles that ensure databases remain accurate and dependable even during system failures or high-volume transactions.
As organizations increasingly manage large volumes of diverse data, alternative database technologies have become essential. This module introduces students to non-relational (NoSQL) databases, object-oriented databases, graph databases, document stores, and distributed database systems. Learners examine the strengths, limitations, and practical applications of these emerging database paradigms, enabling them to select the most appropriate data management solutions for cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, and other modern technology environments.
