This module establishes the mathematical and analytical foundation for modern data science. Students explore probability, statistics, statistical modelling, estimation, inference and stochastic processes before progressing into supervised and unsupervised machine learning. Importantly, the module moves beyond simply learning algorithms by examining model evaluation, validation, bias, fairness, interpretability, overfitting, underfitting and scalability. Students work with real-world datasets and develop the ability to select, evaluate and optimise models. This module focuses on artificial neural networks, deep-learning architectures and image processing, with particular emphasis on computer vision. The Individual Research Project is the largest component of the MSc and gives students an opportunity to investigate a significant data science or computational-intelligence problem independently.
